What is Wegovy?
Wegovy (semaglutide) is a weight loss injection that helps reduce appetite and makes you feel fuller for longer. It works by mimicking a natural hormone in your body and is taken once a week using a simple injection pen. Wegovy is most effective when used alongside a lower-calorie diet and regular activity.
How does Wegovy work?
Wegovy injections contain semaglutide, which mimics a natural hormone in your body that is released after you eat (glucagon-like peptide-1 or GLP-1) to make you feel fuller and help control your blood sugar.
It sends signals to your brain that you’ve eaten, which reduces your appetite levels. It also increases the time it takes for food to empty from your stomach, so you feel fuller for longer after eating. This can stop you overeating or snacking, making it easier to stick to your weight loss plan. Taking it once a week keeps the level of semaglutide in your body constant, which helps you feel fuller.

Beyond weight loss, Wegovy has also been shown to have significant benefits for heart health. In clinical trials, it was found to reduce the risk of major cardiovascular issues such as heart attack and stroke.

After you start your treatment, you should feel fuller after eating by the second or third dose. But since people react differently to medications, it might work slightly faster or slower for you. You could see Wegovy weight loss results as early as 12 weeks after starting treatment. If you have not lost significant weight after 6 months, you should think about changing your treatment.
How effective is Wegovy?
Wegovy is a highly effective weight loss treatment. Clinical studies show that patients lose an average of 21% of their starting weight after 72 weeks of treatment. Studies show:
- around 6% weight loss at early doses
- around 10 to 12% at mid-range doses
- average of 21% at the full dose
Wegovy dosage and routine
When taking Wegovy, you’ll start on the lowest dose which is slowly increased over time. This helps your body get used to the medication, which reduces the chances of side effects.
Each dose step takes at least 4 weeks before moving on to the next one. Each pen contains 4 doses so you’ll use 1 pen for each dose step.
- Weeks 1 to 4: Start with the 0.25mg dose once weekly. This is a starter dose that helps your body get used to the medication.
- Weeks 5 to 8: The dose is increased to 0.5mg once weekly.
- After week 8: Your doctor may increase your dose every 4 weeks if more weight control is needed. The available maintenance doses are 1mg, 1.7mg, 2.4mg, and 7.2mg. The maximum dose is 7.2mg.
If you’re seeing good results at lower doses of Wegovy, it may not be necessary to increase your dose. Never increase your dose without talking to your doctor first.
What if I missed a dose of Wegovy?
If you miss a dose by 5 days or less, you can take that dose. Your next one should be taken on your usual day, as long as it’s been at least 3 days since your last injection.
If you miss a dose and it’s more than 5 days, then wait (skip that dose) and take your next dose on the usual day, at the usual time.
If you want to change the day of the week you use Wegovy to better suit your needs, you can do so as long as there are more than 3 days between doses.
If the last dose you took was more than 2 weeks ago, you need to restart at the lowest strength dose of 0.25mg weekly, and follow the Wegovy dosage schedule again.
What is the Wegovy maintenance dose?
Once you have reached your goal weight, you may choose to continue managing your weight loss with medication, like Wegovy. This is called maintenance. Your doctor will be able to recommend a suitable maintenance dosage for you based on your personal health, medical history, and previous tolerance to Wegovy.
Common maintenance doses of Wegovy include:
- 1mg
- 1.7mg
- 2.4mg
- 7.2mg
Note that there is no ‘right’ maintenance dose. Everybody responds differently to weight loss treatment. For example, one person may find that taking 1.7mg of Wegovy effectively helps them sustain their progress, whereas another may experience side effects and may need to reduce their dose or switch altogether. It is important to have conversations with your doctor and inform them about your weight loss journey so far, this way they can guide you towards maintaining your weight loss progress in the long-term.

How to use Wegovy
You need to take Wegovy once a week for it to be effective, and it works best as part of a weight loss plan that includes a healthy diet and regular exercise as well. To use Wegovy injections safely you should
- only inject Wegovy (semaglutide) into your skin – you should never inject it into a vein or muscle
- inject Wegovy once a week, at around the same time

Step 1: Preparation
- Prepare your pen: Check your pen and make sure it is the correct medication and dose, and that the medication is not damaged or expired. The liquid should be clear and colourless.
- Wash your hands: Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
Step 2: Attach a new needle
- Take a new needle and tear off the paper tab.
- Push the needle straight onto the pen and twist clockwise until it is tight.
- Pull off the outer needle cap (keep this for later).
- Pull off the inner needle cap and throw it away.
Step 3: Check the flow (first use of a new pen only)
- Checking the flow is also known as priming. You only need to do this once for each new pen to ensure it’s working correctly.
- Turn the dose selector until the dose counter shows the flow check symbol (two dots).
- Press and hold the dose button until the counter returns to 0. A drop of liquid should appear at the needle tip. This shows that the pen is ready for injection.
- If no liquid appears then repeat once more. If it still doesn’t work, use a new needle and try again.
Step 4: Injecting the dose
- Choose your injection site: You can inject the needle into the skin of your abdomen (at least 5cm away from your belly button), your thigh, or your upper arm. Choose a new injection site every week to reduce soreness.
- Select the dose: Turn the dose selector until the counter stops at your prescribed dose (for example, 0.25mg).
- Insert the needle: Gently push the needle all the way into the skin of your chosen injection site.
- Press the button: Press and hold down the dose button. You will hear a click.
- Hold and count: Keep the button pressed and watch the dose counter return to 0. Once it reaches 0, slowly count to 6 before removing the needle from your skin. This ensures you receive the full dose.
Step 5: After your injection
- Remove the needle: Carefully place the outer needle cap back on the needle without touching the needle itself.
- Dispose of the needle: Once the needle is covered, unscrew it from the pen and immediately place it in your sharps bin.
- Store the pen: Put the cap back on your Wegovy pen and store it as instructed.

How to inject Wegovy 7.2mg

Wegovy 7.2mg is made up of 3 doses of 2.4mg, meaning you will need to inject yourself 3 times, at the same time, once per week.
The patient information leaflet provided with your medication may not yet be updated for this dose. Follow the instructions here or the specific guidance sent to your ZAVA patient account.
- Attach a fresh needle to your pen. If the pen is brand new, prime the pen as usual.
- Dial your pen to a 2.4mg dose.
- Administer your first dose into your chosen injection site.
- Remove and dispose of the needle.
- Attach a new needle and repeat the process for your second and third injections.
- Ensure each injection site is at least 5cm apart and use a new needle for each dose.
- Use the same pen for all 3 injections. If the pen does not contain enough medication, move on to the next pen. Each pen contains 4 x 2.4mg doses and you will need 3 doses at the same time of 2.4mg to make 7.2mg total.
Worried about self injecting?
“We understand that it may sound off-putting to self-inject your medication. However, the Wegovy pen is designed in a way that is easy for you to use, even without a clinical professional present. Your Wegovy pen uses a pre-filled injection.” – Dr Zenon Andreou, Chief Medical Officer.
If you request self-injection medication from ZAVA, our doctors will give you advice on how to take it, and you can message them for free through your account if you need extra support
What is the most effective way to inject Wegovy?
No particular injection site will make the medication more effective. The most effective place to inject Wegovy is the one that is most comfortable for you.
Can you stay on Wegovy forever?
Wegovy is most effective when used long-term to help you manage your weight. Studies of Wegovy’s effectiveness for weight loss were conducted over 72 weeks. It’s best to discuss your long-term weight loss plans with a doctor. If you do not see any improvement, your doctor may suggest switching treatment.
What happens when you stop taking Wegovy?
Shortly after you stop your Wegovy treatment, your appetite will increase back to normal levels. If you’re having any side effects, they should also go away after the Wegovy in your body is removed. Wegovy can take about up to 2 months to leave your system completely after your last dose.
What should I do if I miss a dose of Wegovy?
If you have missed a dose, what you should do next will depend on how long it’s been since your next dose was due.
If it’s been 5 days or less since your missed dose, take your dose as soon as you remember to. Then take the dose as normal.
If it’s been more than 5 days since your missed dose, you should skip the missed dose and take your next one on your normal day. Do not take a second dose to make up for the missed one.
