PCOS Test & Diagnosis | Symptoms, Hormone Testing & Treatment Guide
A PCOS test usually involves a combination of symptoms review, blood tests, and imaging to diagnose Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. There is no single test that confirms PCOS on its own.
Common tests include:
- Hormone blood tests – to check testosterone, LH, FSH, estrogen, prolactin, and thyroid hormones
- Blood sugar & insulin tests – PCOS is often linked with insulin resistance
- Cholesterol test – to assess metabolic health
- Pelvic ultrasound – to look for enlarged ovaries or multiple ovarian follicles
- Menstrual history & symptoms review – irregular periods, acne, excess hair growth, or weight changes are important clues
Doctors often use the Rotterdam criteria, where at least 2 of these 3 are present:
- Irregular or absent ovulation
- Signs of high androgen hormones
- Polycystic ovaries on ultrasound
Common symptoms of PCOS include:
- Irregular periods
- Weight gain
- Acne
- Hair thinning
- Excess facial/body hair
- Difficulty getting pregnant
